Recently promoted, Aimee Severn is the Assistant Building Manager of Eleven Brindleyplace, a high quality office development in the heart of Birmingham.
How did you start at Workman?
It feels like fate led me to this role! One night, I was out with friends and, passing Eleven Brindleyplace, I couldn’t help but admire the office’s reception. It’s not like me, but I pointed it out and said, “I’d love to work there!” At the time, I wasn’t even looking for a new job. Just a few weeks later, I came across a job posting that seemed perfect. After two interviews with Clair and Julie, I was invited to meet the clients at Eleven Brindleyplace. To my amazement, it was the very building I had admired. Now, two and a half years later, here I am.
How has your journey evolved since joining Workman?
When I first started, I felt a strong passion for this industry and knew I wanted to grow within it. Over the past two years, I’ve focused on learning and developing my skills. With the support of Workman, I completed an Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) course last year, which was invaluable.
What advice do you have for colleagues aspiring to advance in their roles?
Show enthusiasm, take genuine pride in the buildings you work in, and invest in building relationships. Whether it’s with contractors, building management, or landlords, these connections are key. Strong relationships create a supportive network that makes growth possible.
What do you enjoy most about working for Workman?
The people, without a doubt. I’ve never felt so genuinely supported by a company. Workman is incredibly supportive of career progression, even when it means helping someone move on to a new opportunity. I always feel like I’m working with friends, not just managers or colleagues. That environment of trust and teamwork is something I’m very grateful for.
Take us through a typical day in your role at Workman.
In my role as Assistant Building Manager, I start my day by catching up with security and then base myself at reception with Brandon, our receptionist. Being there keeps me accessible to occupiers and allows me to stay up to date on daily operations. If contractors are on-site, I guide them around the building, ensuring safe work practices, compliance, and keeping up with quotes. Each day is busy, with new tasks and challenges, but I enjoy the variety and hands-on learning experience.
Looking ahead, how do you envision developing your role?
I’m not one to plan too far into the future, as things are always evolving, take look at AI for example. However, I have always been very adaptable, and career driven. My ultimate goal is to have a happy working life while constantly pushing myself further. I always seek to understand my role thoroughly, whether that means putting on cleaning gloves or doing a night shift.
Beyond the desk, what are your hobbies, and how do they enrich your role at Workman?
I love exploring new restaurants and cultures, taking weekend walks to clear my mind, and spending time with family. These hobbies keep me balanced and positive, which helps me come to work refreshed and ready to take on new challenges.
What’s a standout moment or achievement that you’ve experienced at Workman so far?
A standout moment for me was being recognised for my hard work and dedication over the past two years, which allowed me to step up into the Assistant Building Manager position.
