The Great Northern, a historic Grade 2 listed asset which is home to some of Manchester’s most popular brands and independent operators, has recently welcomed two new uses adding to the community of occupiers.
Table Tennis England established the Great Northern Ping Pong Hub, a temporary pop-up venue situated within the warehouse premises, operating between January and February 2024. Sponsored by Cornilleau, it served as a hub of activity, linked to the WTT Feeder event held at the Manchester Velodrome.
Offering seven tables, including open play and match courts, the Ping Pong Hub provided opportunities for casual play, practice, and organised events. With a diverse range of activities scheduled, including coaching sessions, club days, workplace competitions, and sessions specifically aimed at women and girls, the Ping Pong Hub promised something for everyone, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the Great Northern Warehouse.
Due to its initial success, the pop-up has been extended for another short-term license, now covering March to May 2024.
A further addition is GRIT Studios, occupying the upper floors of 231-233 Deansgate since October 2023. Founded by the creative duo John and Sophie Macaulay, GRIT Studios offers a collaborative workspace for artists, fostering creativity and innovation within Manchester’s artistic community.
With a variety of workspaces catering to different needs and budgets, GRIT Studios has quickly become a sought-after destination for artists and creatives. The success of GRIT Studios at Great Northern reflects its commitment to providing accessible and inspiring spaces for artists to thrive.
The story of GRIT Studios is one of passion and ambition, with John and Sophie Macaulay’s dedication to arts and culture driving their expansion efforts. Having previously operated Art Battle MCR at Great Northern in 2021, the couple’s vision for GRIT Studios has now come to fruition, with plans for further expansion across Greater Manchester in the coming years.
The success of these new lettings not only enriches the offerings of Great Northern but also underscores the collaborative approach taken by the specialist teams at Workman and Trilogy in revitalising this iconic landmark.
By fostering a diverse and vibrant ecosystem of operators, uses and activities, Great Northern continues to cement its status as a hub of creativity, culture, and community in the heart of Manchester.
