Discovering new pathways: How Regeneration Brainery empowers young professionals
When recent graduate Lauren Banks was searching for opportunities, little did she know that a chance conversation with a friend would open up a world of possibilities…
Hoping to explore a potential career shift following her degree in graphic design, Lauren decided to give the Regeneration Brainery programme a try. What she discovered was a dynamic initiative that not only broadened her horizons, but also equipped her with the confidence and skills to thrive in the built environment industry.
Regeneration Brainery, a North West-based organisation, aims to introduce young people from diverse backgrounds to the vast array of career opportunities within property, construction, and related fields.
“I was really intrigued by the idea of gaining exposure to different industries I hadn’t considered before,” Lauren explains. “The Regeneration Brainery bootcamp was an eye-opening experience, allowing me to explore everything from engineering and surveying to architecture.”
Over the course of a week, Lauren and her fellow “Brainees” took part in hands-on activities, site visits, and presentations from industry professionals. From the innovative eco-friendly testing facilities at Salford University to the bustling operations at Weir Mill in Stockport, she gained first-hand insight into the diverse career paths available.
However, Regeneration Brainery’s impact extended beyond just educational experiences. The programme also focused on developing essential soft skills, such as networking and public speaking.
“The events really helped coax me out of my shell,” Lauren (pictured below left) says. “Being able to confidently approach and engage with industry leaders was a game-changer for me.”
Regeneration Brainery played a key role in Lauren’s journey to joining Workman as an Assistant Management Surveyor last September, and her involvement with the organisation has since evolved—she is now a mentor to younger participants, sharing her own journey and insights. This mentorship role not only strengthened her passion for the built environment but also gave her the opportunity to pay it forward, inspiring the next generation of industry professionals.
“Seeing the impact I could have on other young people’s lives was incredibly rewarding,” Lauren says. “It’s a testament to the power of Regeneration Brainery’s approach – they’re not just providing exposure but also nurturing the confidence and skills needed to thrive in this field.”
As Lauren’s career at Workman continues to flourish, her involvement with Regeneration Brainery remains a vital part of her professional development. Meanwhile, the organisation’s partnerships with industry leaders have further expanded the opportunities available to Lauren and her fellow Brainees.
“Regeneration Brainery has been instrumental in shaping my career path,” Lauren says. “I’m excited to see how I can continue contributing to their mission and inspiring others who may not have considered a career in the built environment.”
Today, Lauren is on Workman’s Graduate Scheme in the Retail and Leisure team, and will be beginning her UCEM Real Estate Master’s degree this spring. Lauren is also a member of the Workman Graduate Committee.
